Why audio-only files are useful
Video contains image data that you may not need. When the purpose is listening, an MP3 avoids carrying those frames and is usually much smaller. This makes audio easier to keep on limited storage, transfer between devices, or organize in an audio library.
Bitrate is about data allocation
A higher MP3 bitrate allows more data per second of audio, but the original track still defines the quality ceiling. Encoding a weak source at 320 kbps simply creates a larger representation of that weak source. That is why a medium setting can be more efficient than automatically selecting the maximum.
A simple way to choose
- Start at 128 kbps when size matters most.
- Use 192 kbps when you want a balanced general-purpose file.
- Try 256 kbps when you prefer a higher bitrate without going to the maximum.
- Choose 320 kbps when storage is less important and the source quality justifies it.
What if the conversion fails?
